This smart card plan by the corporation of Chennai for paying taxes is superb

People living in the city of Chennai could make their payment for property as well as for metro water taxes by means of a smart card. It is now said that the Greater Chennai Corporation would roll out smart cards for the sake of the people.
The name given for this is ‘Integrated Common Card Payment System and last month tenders for this service were called. The news is civic body has not chosen the vendor till now. This was confirmed by a senior official belonging to the corporation of Chennai.
According to the senior official, a financial institution as a partner would be brought inside. He also hinted that the winning bidder would supply RFID or radio frequency identification cards and POS machines or purpose made point-of-sale machines.
It is now clear from the sources that amount of Rs 10 crore would be spent on this new plan by civic body.
It is well known that CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited has given smart cards for the sake of commuters. It is now revealed that this new smart card for paying taxes would function in the similar manner to the above mentioned smart cards of CMRL.
Residents would be able to buy these smart cards at a nominal rate and one main advantage is the user would be able to top up to recharge these smart cards issued for paying taxes.
It is important to mention here that the winning bidder would provide the facility for recharging these smart cards once when the initial minimum pre-recharged amount gets over. For the payment of property taxes, metro water taxes plus bi-monthly electricity bills these smart cards issued by the corporation of Chennai could be utilized.
It is superb to note that these smart cards could also be programmed so that the residents could pay their telephone bills, parking slot fee etc and it would be superb. An official belonging to the corporation of Chennai expressed his thoughts and said open loop cards would be issued to the citizens and payments in retail outlets would also be possible by that.
One important piece of information is the smart card must be used within the limits of the city corporation. It must be noted that currently there are no facilities to accept card payment at the property tax collection centres of the corporation.
A revenue official spoke about how after demonetization when there was cash shortage the people used cash only to make payments and he also said there was no use for the POS machines.
