Steep rise in the price of small onions

Posted on: 21/Jun/2017 12:05:52 PM
Due to the recent severe drought conditions, the harvesting of small onion has rather been very low. Because of the shortage, small onion is being sold at a price of Rs. 150 per kg in Theni district.

As the monsoon season had failed in Tamil Nadu, the farmers are unable to do any work and consequently, the prices of the vegetables have gone up.

As the arrival of the normal quantity of small onion reaching Theni district has come down, the price of the small onions rose steeply – it is sold at Rs. 120 to Rs. 150 per kg.

As the price of small onion has shot up by Rs. 70 per kg within a week, the public refrain from buying small onions.

Subsequently, the retail/wholesalers who bought small onions at higher prices have incurred losses.

Generally, small onions are sown during the 3rd week of May and harvested during July.

The traders inform that there are no chances of increased arrival of small onions in the next month also. So, the price is likely to go up further.

In one of the largest wholesale vegetable markets in Tamil Nadu, in the Oddanchathirm vegetable fair, small onion is now being sold at Rs. 80 per kg.

In Madurai, the price of small onion is Rs. 90 per kg. In Virudhunagar, it is Rs. 100 per kg. The traders have demanded that in order to meet the shortage, small onions must be bought from other states.

Meanwhile, 10 trucks laden with small onions have been arriving daily from the state of Maharashtra to the Pavoorchatram vegetable fair in Tirunelveli district. As there are no storage facilities in the Pavoorchatram Fair, these lorries have been stationed outside the fair in several places. The small onions in stock are being sold at Rs. 7 to Rs. 10 per kg and the balance is being sent to Kerala district.
