New buildings to have solar power

Posted on: 16/Feb/2016 4:39:56 PM
A Government Order (G.O.) was issued by the Housing and Urban Development Department that says that planning approvals for new buildings will be issued only if they are provided with a solar energy system. The buildings including special buildings, which are ground plus four floors, and multi storied building, which are above four floors. The approvals are issued by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.

In addition to this, the developer will need to use a minimum of one third of the terrace areas to install the solar photovoltaic cells. This Government Order will help to make amendments in the Development regulations to the Second Master Plan.

A majority of those in the construction industry have welcomes the move. However, smaller builders and those engaged in joint property development have shown concern over the cost issues. On an average, it takes Rs. 1.4 lakh per kilo watt (KW) to set up a quality solar plant.

Say renewable energy experts, The GO stressed on the solar power to be used for common space areas for lighting, lifts and pumps, off grid (having batteries), but solar plants come at a price. Consumers can install solar plants with assistance from the Chief Minister’s Rooftop Capital Incentive Scheme and JNNSM of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. It (the GO) was a positive development, reflecting the seriousness of the State government to promote renewable energy. The cost of installing a solar plant may not be much for multi-storeyed apartments.
