Officials of the Highways Department have said that the timing of the floods may have been a blessing in disguise. Many of the roads that were damaged in the deluge where already slated for repair work. And since work hadn`t started, the task is not as uphill as it would`ve been otherwise.
32 road stretches and some bridges in the city and the suburbs will be relaid and repaired.
Said an official, At least the timing was good. Otherwise we would have been forced to repair roads that were just fixed. We finished the tender process by December and the contractors have been chosen. Work on most stretches has begun .The rest will begin by next week and everything will be completed by March. Some of the stretches that would be repaired are on East Coast Road (ECR), Inner Ring Road, Poonamallee High Road and Grand Southern Trunk Road. On Inner Ring Road, we are increasing the width of the footpaths to 2.5m from the existing 1.8m. This is to accommodate the increased footfalls after metro rail came up.
This comes as good news for some residents. Says a resident of Anakaputhur, There is no road now. It is just sand, bricks and concrete debris that have been haphazardly strewn around. Dust settles on food, furniture and other household items. Hope the new road will put an end to this.
The roads on ECR are being repaired now. An engineer said, We will finish the work by March-end.
