Tamil Nadu Transport Minister P. Thangamani announced that the government is considering installing CC TV camera in all its buses. According to the statement, the project will take place in a phased manner. The financial viability of the initiative has to be taken into consideration.
Addressing the Assembly, Mr. Thangamani said, `The transport department has already installed two CCTV cameras in each of the 100 Volvo AC buses in the state - in the rear side and near the middle door. It will consider extending the same to city and omnibuses.`
As of now, a few buses in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts have Closed Circuit Television Cameras fitted in them. The Minister spoke about the issue when it was raised by others during the Assembly session.
A Minister from MMK said, `CCTV footages would be of great help in enhancing the safety of passengers, especially women, besides curbing crimes. The senior police officer of Tuticorin district himself endorsed that CCTVs had thwarted attempts to disrupt social harmony in the region. The government should also see the private buses and educational institutions fall in line.`
Mr. Thangamani expressed concern as far as the cost of the project goes. He said, `The initiative would require huge sum, as the state operates over 22,000 buses and would be difficult to install the cameras at one go. It costs the exchequer of Rs 25,000 to install even one camera.`
