The Chennai Metro Water has mentioned that the ground water level in 15 places in Chennai. Chennai Metro Water has been monitoring the condition of 145 wells. Metro Water also observed that salinity in groundwater has reduced over the last decade, with areas like New Vannarapettai and Chintadripet showing huge improvement. Salinity-content in the groundwater at New Vannarapettai reduced from 3,600 parts per million (ppm) in 2003 to 800 ppm. The groundwater table average of the city has risen from 5.59 metres last year to 4.79 metres this year. Metrowater officials attributed the rise in the water level to its rainwater harvesting awareness campaigns.
Alandur and Perungudi, which contain soil made of hard rock, marked the highest rise in the water table with an increase of 1.85 and 1.88 metres respectively. Manali, which has clayey soil, registered the lowest rise of 0.05 metres.
