While the students are all set to embark on their UG courses in various fields, especially medical science, it remains to be a bleak scenario for many of them who cannot afford to be a part of this course due to the high fee structure furnished by the private institutions on Dental Colleges. This indeed has now urged the need to launch a new Government Dental College in Chennai across the ambience of Omandurar Government Garden and things are waiting up for the official approval of Indian Dental Council.
As of now, its more disappointing to see that only 100 seats for UG course are offered by Government Dental College and 40 for masters. Moreover, 15% of them is allotted to the candidates of all India quota.
It has been a collected fact from the Medical counselling that is happening in Chennai now. It is seen that many students who are not able to afford MBBS aspire to take up Dental courses, but again due to the inadequacy of the seats.
Shedding lights on this situation, Major V Murali, Legal Convenor, Indian Dental Association, Tamil Nadu Branch utter, Private institutions are not following the fee structure formed by Government committees and what turns to be more pathetic is that they charge tuition fees even for the ones who have passed through Government Quota. Adding more he says that instead of saying that there is no scope for Dentists, the Government should create a situation for the prominence as Dental care is the demand of the hour as much as other department of medicine. Right now there are 29 private dental colleges and only 18 among them are Government affiliated.
On his part, Nasser, former principal of the Government Dental College says that it has been a long time issue of setting up more dental colleges and puts forth a valid question went there are 20 medical colleges, why not two dental colleges.
