The arrival of coal stock for thermal power stations in Tamil Nadu has depleted over the last week.
This may lead to disruption in power generation.
The total installed generation capacity in Tamil Nadu including hydro & thermal power stations is 12000 MW.
A maximum of 4770 MW is generated from thermal power station.2600 MW is generated from hydro power stations.
The shortage is met by buying power from Central government power stations, unconventional energy sources and private power generation companies.
Coal required for Tamil Nadu’s thermal power station is procured from Talcher & Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) coal mines as approved by the central government.
Tamil Nadu procures about 1,6 Crore tons of coal per year. 80% of the coal requirement is met by this. The balance quantity of coal is procured from foreign countries such as Indonesia.
With the the onset of summer and increase in the demand for electricity, coal must be made available continuously. However, arrival of coal has been depleted over the last few days, especially from 1st March.
The officials inform that only 35% of the required quantity of coal has reached Tamil Nadu. This may lead to disruption in power generation.
