Around $4.1 billion (Rs. 253 billion) is slated to be spent for tackling electricity theft. This is to be carried out by upgrading existing distribution network and metering in cities, according to the power minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s effort is to diminish transmission losses and cut electricity theft thereby supplying the entire country with uninterrupted power supply.

Most Indian states account for over 40$ of unpaid electricity due to antiquated transmission lines and poor policies. Many Indians view free or affordable power as their right and not a privilege. Modi earlier tackled power shortages when he has Gujarat’s Chief Minister in 2005. He clamped down hard on power theft while helping with the finances of the distribution companies that faced huge unpaid bills.

According to the power minister, this scheme is to witness meters being rolled out on the distribution transformers, consumers and feeders in the urban areas. This will get followed by the project’s cabinet approval. Distribution networks and sub-transmission are also likely to get strengthened by the government. Such projects can effectively cut down the on commercial and technical losses while enhancing collection efficiency. The total cost is Rs. 326 billion and the government would grant Rs. 235 billion.
