TANGEDCO efforts to counter power shortage in Tamil Nadu

Posted on: 05/May/2014 3:50:01 PM
New power stations will start generating an additional 2100 MW in Tamil Nadu during the coming 6 months. The final stages of the work are being completed at a rapid pace.

The commissioning of 3 x 600 MW units at Vallur Thermal Power station started in the year 2007 with the project cost estimated at Rs. 9,193 Crores.

The work has been completed for 2 units. The first unit was commissioned in November, 2012. The second unit was commissioned in August, 2013. The construction of the third unit is nearing completion.

Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) and TANGEDCO jointly started the project of 2 x 500 MW thermal power generation units at Thoothukudi at the cost of Rs. 4,900 Crores. The work commenced in 2007. The generation for commercial purposes was scheduled to start in August, 2012. However, the project did not progress as per this schedule. With a new type of boiler being installed, getting the spares causes delay. Also, there are frequent technical problems faced by the project.

However, the completion of this project is being expedited. The first unit is expected to be commissioned in June, 2014. The second unit is to be commissioned by September, 2014.

Meanwhile, work in the North Madras Thermal Power station of 2 x 600 MW is under full swing. This project, at a cost of Rs. 4,031 Crores, was started in 2008. The work on the seond unit of 600 MW has been completed and test-runs are being conducted. Commercial generation of power is expected either by the end of May or early June.

Tamil Nadu currently faces a shortage of 1500 MW.

With wind season set to start, generation of 3,500 MW is expected from the wind power plants. This will help overcome the above power shortage.

North Madras 2nd unit of 600 MW, Vallur 3rd Unit of 500 MW, and Tutticorin NLC project at 1000 MW are expected to generate an additional 2,100 MW.

Further, the hydro project at Periyar Vaigai dam is also set to generate power.

All these projects will help Tamil Nadu to provide consistent power supply without any breaks.
