Severe summer has strongly affected the growth of ginger. The price of ginger has shot up from Rs. 70/- per kilo to Rs. 100/- per kilo.
Several places in Tamil Nadu face acute drinking water shortage. Water levels in lakes, ponds, and wells have been receding.
There is no water available even for agriculture.
With the onset of severe part of the summer, the drinking water shortage has become even more acute.
Hence, both the farmers and the public have been affected. With no water under the scorching sun, vegetables such as ginger, green chillies, and beans wither and go waste. The yield has also come down. The quantities of vegetables arriving at Koyambedu has come down drastically.
Usually, 800 trucks come to deliver the vegetables at Koyambedu market. Now, only 600 trucks bring the vegetables. Even the reduced quantities are not of good quality.
Retail shops sell beans, ginger, and green chillies at higher price of 20% to 30%.
The president of Koyambedu vegetable Traders Association, Mr. Ravichandran informed:Vegetable production has reduced because of summer. This has reduced the usual quantity arriving at Koyambedu. Especially the growth of beans, ginger, and green chillies has been affected severely. Usually, 13 trucks from Andhra used to bring these 3 items. Now, only 6 to 8 trucks arrive. Further, the number of trucks from Kerala bringing ginger has also reduced to 7 as compared more than 14.
Two days ago, ginger sold at Rs. 70/- per kilo. Now, the wholesale price of ginger stands at Rs. 90/- to Rs. 100/-. Green chillies are sold at Rs. 25/- per kg. .Beans is sold at Rs. 50/- per kg.
