Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Heavy Rain Forecast from July 2 to July 7; IMD Issues Alert for Several Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall across several districts of Tamil Nadu between July 2 and July 7, 2026. The rain is expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, with isolated heavy rainfall likely in parts of the Western Ghats.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the prevailing weather conditions are being influenced by an upper air cyclonic circulation over Karnataka and favourable atmospheric conditions over adjoining regions, which are expected to trigger widespread rainfall across the State over the next few days.

Heavy Rain Likely in Nilgiris, Theni and Coimbatore

On July 2, moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is likely in many parts of Tamil Nadu, while Nilgiris and Theni districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places.

The rainfall activity is expected to continue on July 3, with Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Theni likely to experience heavy showers. Several other districts may also receive moderate rain accompanied by strong winds.

The IMD has advised people living in low-lying areas and hilly regions to remain alert as heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging and localized disruptions.

Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Expected

The weather department has warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds may occur in many districts during the forecast period. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during thunderstorms and take adequate safety precautions.

Temperatures to Remain High in Interior Districts

Despite the expected rainfall, several interior districts of Tamil Nadu are likely to continue experiencing high daytime temperatures.

Recent maximum temperatures recorded include:

Madurai: 102.56°F (39.2°C)
Nagapattinam: 100.76°F (38.2°C)
Cuddalore: 100.04°F (37.8°C)

The IMD said temperatures could touch 104°F (40°C) in some interior parts of the State.

Fishermen Warned of Strong Winds

The IMD has also issued a warning for fishermen due to strong winds over the sea.

On July 5, winds with speeds of up to 65 kmph are likely over the South Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and adjoining Kumari Sea.

On July 6, wind speeds of 60–65 kmph are expected over the Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Bay of Bengal.

Fishermen are advised to check the latest weather updates before venturing into the sea and follow official advisories.

High Wave Alert Along Tamil Nadu Coast

A high-wave warning has also been issued for parts of the Tamimil Nadu coastline. Wave heights ranging from 0.8 metres to 4 metres are likely at selected coastal locations, increasing the risk of rough sea conditions.

Authorities have urged coastal residents and fishermen to remain cautious and avoid venturing into the sea during periods of adverse weather.

The IMD has advised the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions as rainfall activity is expected to continue across Tamil Nadu over the coming days.
