The India Meteorological Department said the cyclonic storm Lehar over Andaman Sea moved westward and crossed Andaman and Nicobar islands south of Port Blair between 0130 and 0230 hours today. At 0230 hours, it lay centered near latitude 11.50N and longitude 92.50E, a bulletin issued by the IMD at 0530 hours today. The system would intensify further, move west-northwestwards and then emerge into southeast Bay of Bengal, intensify further gradually into a very severe cyclonic storm.
It would move west-northwestwards and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada around noon on November 28.Under its influence, there will be rainfall at most places over the Andaman & Nicobar islands during the next 24 hours with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls (25 cm or more).
Gale winds with speed reaching 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph, would prevail along and off Andaman & Nicobar Islands during the next 12 hours.Storm surge of about 1 to 1.5 metre height above astronomical tide would inundate the low lying areas of Andaman & Nicobar Islands within 100 km from the landfall point.
Sea condition will be high to very high along and off Andaman & Nicobar Islands during the next 12 hours.
