The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that construction of the double-decker elevated stretch of the Port–Maduravoyal Expressway will soon begin at Padi Kuppam, where the road crosses the Cooum River.
The 20.9-km expressway will connect Koyambedu with Chennai Port. The first 5.7 km section from Vanagaram to Koyambedu will be a single-deck elevated road, after which it will become a double-decker structure at Padi Kuppam.
So far, 25 double-decker pillars have been installed over the Cooum. New pillars will be built at 8 metres, with the second-level roadway constructed at 16 metres. The lower deck will cater to city traffic, while the upper deck will provide a direct route to the port.
Both corridors will be toll-operated. NHAI officials said the project will significantly ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time across Chennai.
