Human Immunodeficiency virus or HIV over time is responsible for deadly AIDS or Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome is a well known fact. Persons with AIDS would have a progressive failure of their immune system allowing serious infections and cancers etc to thrive.

It is really shocking to note that there are 7618 kids who are affected by AIDS in Tamil Nadu. The good news is that the TN govt has announced a scheme for these AIDS affected kids and these kids would be receiving an amount of Rs 1000 per month.

On Tuesday, the TN health minister Mr. M. Subramanian grabbed many eyeballs when he launched this superb scheme for the sake of AIDS affected kids across TN.  At the Omandurar Multi Purpose Hospital in Chennai, the health minister was busy at the World Blood Donor Day event and he launched this scheme.

Not many would know that the health minister Mr. M. Subramanian was a regular blood donor and till now has donated his blood 66 times. To recognise this, the TN Public Health secretary Mr. P. Senthilkumar presented a special award to the health minister.

On 14th of June every year, World Blood Donor Day is observed. It is worth recalling that former CM of TN Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi donated Rs 5 crores in 2009/2010 to start a trust on behalf of the TN government to help the children affected with HIV/AIDS.

Information gathered is that the interest amount from Rs 5 cr has been used to provide annual assistance for education, medical care and nutrition of the kids below the age of 18.

In addition to Rs 5 cr, an amount of Rs 25 crores has been deposited in the Power Finance Corporation of the TN government.  In this scenario, it was mentioned that an amount of Rs 1000 per month would be provided to every HIV/AIDS affected kid across TN using the funds available.

An amount of Rs 1.89 crores has been allocated for 7618 children and the project has been launched now.

For creating awareness among the students regarding HIV/AIDS, new Red Cross societies would be formed in 50 colleges in TN. So far about 11 societies have been started. Point to be noted is that students studying in the classes 8th, 9th and 11th in 9830 schools in TN would be given training to provide awareness to the adolescents about the disease. In about 100 schools across TN, life skills training would be provided to the students

The event saw the participation of important personalities like director of national health commission Mr. Arunthamburaj, director of TN State Blood Transfusion Commission R. Seethalakshmi, director of PH & ID Dr. T. Selvavinayagam and few others.
