What cheerful news for Chennaites who have never tasted the wonderful pure Cauvery water. It is really a dream come true. The surplus from Mettur will take a circuitous route first to Veeranam in Cuddalore and then to Chennai through canals and pipes, across more than 300km.
Metrowater will start pumping water for treatment immediately after the intake well in Veeranam gets filled up. From Veeranam, it will travel 250km through steel pipes to reach Chennai. The treated water will be sent to the city`s distribution points and Cauvery water will be sent to households without any delay.
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in 2004 launched the Veeranam water supply scheme. The capacity of the lake is 1.4 tmcft. Raw water from here will be pumped for a distance of 20km to Vadakuthu treatment plant via steel pipes.
Once the water is treated, it is sent to another tank at Kadampuliyur 8km away. Subsequently, it travels 200km through steel pipes by gravity to the Porur water distribution station in the southern suburb of Chennai. The water is again pumped to a distance of 1.2km and distributed to Chennai households through water mains and distribution stations.
