On Tuesday, 12th July 2022, the railway gate was closed in the evening and did not open for nearly 2 hours. Many passengers suffered. This made the angry commuters take part in a rail rook near Perungalathur railway station. It must be taken into note that the only entrance to Perungalathur from the GST Road is through the railway gate. The residents would have to travel a distance of a few kilometres to enter Perungalathur via Vandalur. In the emergency situations, people have been finding it very tough as the Perungalathur railway gate will be closed in the peak hours.
After closing at 5pm on Tuesday, the gate at Perungalathur railway station did not open until 6:30pm. Many commuters got angered by this and they staged a rail rook in the railway station by blocking EMU between Chengapet and Beach. Near Irumbuliyur, the Tambaram- Villupuram train was stopped.
Peace talks were held by railways and Peerkankaranai police and promised that the railway gate would not be closed for a long time in the future. The rail roko by the irked commuters was responsible for the delay in the EMU and express trains from Egmore to several southern districts in TN.
