The persons who die must be given a dignified farewell!!
For this sake, GCC would be giving a makeover for the major crematoriums in the Chennai city. The crematoriums would have better landscape, greenery and several modern facilities.
In the near future, for providing a makeover, works would be taken up by the civic body at various crematoriums present in various localities likeMylapore, Velachery, Arumbakkam, Moolakothalam,Otteri, Kasimedu, Chemmenchery, Kannan Nagar, Nungambakkam and Besant Nagar etc.
There are also crematoriums in other places in Chennai and these too would be renovated by GCC. This was according to the GCC commissioner Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi. Proposals must be submitted under Singara Chennai 2.0 for the beautification of the facilities in the extended areas in Chennai.
For up-gradation of the crematoriums under Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative, The TN government has allotted Rs 6.13 crores. For renovating 10 crematoriums in Chennai, the TN government has sanctioned funds is known. Whenever required, the crematoriums would be covered under LPG based facilities. For upgrading the Moolakothalam crematorium near Washermanpet, Rs 2.61 crores has been allotted.
It must not be forgotten that the residential associations have been asking GCC to re-design the landscape of the crematoriums and prevent misuse of space. There is a crematorium near the Guru Nanak College in Velachery and the residents have requested GCC to improve the landscape and greenery etc. This was mentioned by Mr. Kumararaja, vice-president of Annai Indira Nagar Residents Welfare Association.
He spoke about how GCC must find an alternate space for parking of Urbaser conservancy vehicles. It is surprising to mention that more than 2 acres of space has been used for parking of the conservancy vehicles of Urbaser. The stench from these vehicles has been unbearable for the residents in the locality. Between 1pm and 3 pm a large number of Urbaser conservancy vehicles get parked in this crematorium.
To provide a solution for this issue, officers of the Chennai Corporation have been requested. A solution is expected once when the crematorium here gets upgraded by the GCC. Likewise, renovation works have been taken up at crematoriums in places like Besant Nagar, Chemmenchery etc. An amount of Rs 32.65 lakhs would be spent for this.
At an estimated cost of Rs 1/46 crores, Chemmenchery crematorium would get modernised. At an estimated cost of Rs 61.17lakhs, it was decided to restart the tender process for modernisation of crematorium at Kasimedu would be done soon. Dismantling of an old gasifier at Kanna Nagar crematorium has been completed.
