The Chennai residents are having two main issues now!!

The scorching summer heat has been creating issues for many is a well known fact. In addition to this, the hike in the vegetable prices has also caused an additional issue now for the residents.

At the Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai, the prices of several vegetables have increased and it is having a huge effect on the retail sector. Normally, in the summer season, the prices of vegetables would increase. In this summer season, due to reduction in the arrivals of vegetables due to dip in the yield has led to spiralling cost of veggies like tomato, lemon and coriander leaf etc.

It is normal for the prices of lemon to soar in the summers and last year it was Rs 170 per kilogram. In April 2022, the lemon cost Rs 200 per kilogram. It is noteworthy that the Koyambedu wholesale market receives 90% of lemons from Andhra Pradesh and the rest 10% from the remaining districts in Tamil Nadu. In this month, the Koyambedu market had not received daily stock of lemons from within the state and there has been a dip in the lemon supply from AP too.

Depending on the variety and quality, the prices of tomatoes have also increased from Rs 25 per kg to Rs 40 per kg now. Other vegetables like beans, broad beans, gourd varieties were also sold at high rates. Yesterday at this market, coriander leaf was sold at Rs 150 per kg. The wholesalers have pointed out that the cost of drum sticks was Rs 8 to Rs 10 per kg and prices of beetroots and onions have remained stable.

From 480 truckloads during the normal times, the number of truckloads received at Koyambedu market has reduced to 400 to 420 now. This was according to Mr. P. Sukumar, treasurer of Koyambedu Vegetables Fruits Flowers Association.
