The drivers of the vehicles are now fuming regarding the steep hike in the amount that is collected for renewal of fitness certificate in Chennai. It is worthy to note that the charges to renew the fitness certificates or FC of the vehicles that are 15 years or more have been increased many times now and the revised rates have come into effect from 1st of April 2022. A notification was issued a month back by the Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways. This was as a part of the plan to launch the National Automobile Scrappage Policy.
Lorry and autorickshaw drivers were totally against the hike and they demanded a roll back in the hike. It was later mentioned by an auto driver that the TN govt must have given atleast one year time before taking such a decision. It is true that after Covid-19 lockdown many drivers were without jobs and they drove old autos sourced from family and friends. The earnings of the auto drivers now have not yet reached the pre-Covid levels and the revised fee is high. It was mentioned by an officer belonging to the transport department that the charges for FC renewal were collected by the union government through an online portal. He added that the TN government was unable to reduce or deter the implementation of the decision.
Revised and old fares:
From an amount of Rs 600 as charge for renewal of FC, the drivers or owners of cars would have to pay Rs 5000 as charges. For the bikes, the charges have increased from Rs 300 to Rs 1000 now. The charges for FC renewal have increased from Rs 600 to Rs 2500 now for autos and from Rs 1500 to Rs 12500 now. From Rs 1000, the charges for renewal of FC for passenger motor vehicles are Rs 10000 now.
