The news that Chennai recorded its hottest day on 22nd March in 2022 has been the topic for discussions for many now. Only two times in the last decade in March month, both Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded the highest day temperature of nearly 38 degree Celsius. Meenambakkam recorded 38 degrees Celisus while Nungambakkam recorded 37.6 degrees Celsius. This happened yesterday in Chennai. The highest temperature of 40.2 degrees was observed at Madurai.
Information is that 32.9 degree Celsius is the mean daytime temperature in March but yesterday Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded nearly 4 degrees more than the normal. Since the year 2021, Chennai city has never touched 37 Degree Celsius also in the month of March. It was on the 29th of March in the year 1953 Chennai recorded an all time high of 40.6 degrees.
At the isolated pockets of TN, Karaikal and Puducherry, maximum temperature would be likely to be more than 2 to 4 degrees than the normal temperature. This was according to RMC.
Cyclone that formed over the north Andaman Sea and the adjoining places of east Central Bay of Bengal was responsible for this sudden heat condition in March. The cyclone has sucked all the moisture and blocked the cool sea breeze. Point is that the system has turned into a deep depression and would likely move northwards away from the Andaman Islands and cross Myanmar coast as a deep depression.
As the system would lose its steam, normal weather conditions would come back again from Wednesday onwards. People in Chennai and its suburban places suffered in the searing heat yesterday. In 1 or 2 places across Tamil Nadu, there would be light to moderate rains till the weekend. This would be due to convective activity and it is now said that the convective activity would subside after a few days.
