On Tuesday, the Advisory Committee on Mitigation and Management of Flood Risk in the Chennai Metro was busy discussing the possibilities of creating a new reservoir at Ramancheri across Nagari River. There were discussions regarding using this reservoir as a new drinking water source for Chennai. Various water resources around Chennai were inspected by the members of the advisory committee.

They explored the chances of creating another reservoir in the Tiruvallur district. It is said that this new reservoir located 11kms upstream of Poondi reservoir could store water up to 1200 mcft. It would also mitigate flooding in the downstream portion of Kosasthalaiyar River.

It is known that the Kesavaram anicut is in very bad condition. The committee members also gave some suggestions to improve this Kesavaram anicut that has been the decisive point of flow in Cooum and Kosasthalaiyar Rivers. There were recommendations about strengthening of the river bank near anaicut and clearing of vegetation.

Portion of unpolluted Cooum River was visited by the team and then it reviewed the new storage structure at Pudhumavilangai and the British era Korattur anicut that was reconstructed recently. Thiruninravur tank was also inspected by the team members and discussions about the need to initiate permanent steps to reduce floods in the neighbouring slum clearance board tenements took place.

Some officers belonging to WRD mentioned that areas like Muthamizh Nagar, Periyar Nagar, Sudesi Nagar etc get submerged under the water every monsoon season. It was also suggested by the committee members that the tank could also be used as a drinking water source for the nearby places and for the Chennai city.

It is learnt that the committee members including Mr. Kapil Gupta, civil engineering department, IIT- Bombay and Mr. Balaji Narasimhan, civil engineering department, IIT-M inspected along with officials from WRD and GCC.
