The arrival of tomatoes was reduced due to snowfall! Price shoots up to Rs. 90/- per kg!

Though the price of tomatoes was under control and a reducing trend over the last few days, the price of tomatoes has sky-rocketed again due to snowfall!

Tomato was sold for Rs. 90/- per kg in Salem yesterday! The public was shocked!

Generally, tomatoes are grown on a large scale in Tamil Nadu with a good yield. However, due to the trend of snowfall in the past few days, the agricultural produce has been greatly affected in the districts of Dharmapuri, Salem, Krishnagiri, Theni, Virudhunagar, Thirunelveli, Dindigul, Karur, and Erode.

Further, the usual quantum of tomatoes arriving in trucks from the states of Andhra and Karnataka was also reduced!

As such, the price of tomato kept shooting up  - Tomato, which was sold at Rs. 20/- per kg during the 1st week of October, shot up to Rs. 100/- per kg in November!

It reduced somewhat in December and was sold at Rs. 35/- per kg.

However, with less quantity of tomato arrival over the last 2 days, the price of tomato has shot up again! It has shot up by Rs, 25/- per kg!  On 20th December, tomatoes of top grade sold at Rs. 45/- per kg in the farmers� wholesale market. Yesterday (28th December), the top grade tomato was sold at Rs. 75/- per kg. The 2nd-grade tomato sold at Rs. 60/- per kg!

Top grade tomato, which sold at Rs. 40, has shot up to Rs. 70/- per kg. The 2nd Grade tomato, which sold at Rs. 35/- per kg, shot up to Rs. 65/- per kg!

Rural grown tomato of top-grade which was sold at Rs. 60/- per kg in the open market, shot up to Rs. 90/- per kg and the 2nd-grade tomato price shot up from  Rs. 55/- per kg to Rs. 75/- per kg!  As on the latest, top-grade tomato which sold at Rs. 50/- per kg, shot up to Rs. 75/- per kg and the 2nd-grade tomato, from Rs. 45/- per kg, shot up to Rs. 65/- per kg.

Carrot and beetroot price crossed the century (Rs. 100/- per kg) mark! Carrot and beetroot are grown in the mountainous areas of Tamil nadir such as Ooty, Kodaikanal, and Mettupalayam, and Bengaluru of Karnataka State, The quantum of the arrival of carrot, beetroot, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, turnip, and capsicum have also reduced.

Until last month, up to 200 Lorries arrived from the colder places with loads of the above vegetables. However, presently, only 75 trucks are arriving. As such, the price of these vegetables has also shot up to Rs. 50/- per kg.

1 kg of carrot was sold at Rs. 130/- per kg and beetroot, at Rs. 120/- per kg.

Prospects for the price of small onion to go up!

In a notification released by the domestic and export market Information centre, it is mentioned:

As the vegetable produce was damaged due to the recent persistent rains in Karnataka and Andhra, the arrival of the quantum of onions got reduced. Due to the rains in July and August, the onion crops in Tamil Nadu were also damaged and the yield of am all onions was damaged.

Event the stocks kept of small onions also got rotten!  As such, there are prospects for the prices of small onions to shoot up!
