Street vendors in Chennai would soon benefit from various schemes belonging to both the central as well as state government!!
For this, a city wide survey would be conducted by the GCC for identifying various street vendors. These street vendors would be given identity cards. The street vendors would be classified into 3 main categories like stationary, wandering and mobile. It is now said that a consultant would be appointed to conduct the city wide survey. This was brought out by a Chennai Corporation document.
It must be taken into note that those vendors who carry out vending at a particular location would be categorized as stationary vendors. Under the wandering vendors category would be those who carry out vending on foot and sell goods and services using pushcarts or carry baskets etc. Those vendors who move from place to place in their bicycles or by other mobile units would be categorized as mobile vendors.
It was mentioned by an official belonging to GCC that during the survey details regarding name of the vendor, parents name, permanent address, present address, ID proofs, phone number, place of vending, time of vending, type of vending activity, time and duration of engagement as a vendor, Aadhar number, type of blood group etc would be collected.
Not only the street vendors would be categorized by the officers belonging to GCC but these officers would also be identifying areas where street vendors have been profiled and the areas would be categorized as restriction free, restricted and prohibited vending zones based on the street vendors.
For preparing street vending plans, a vending map for Chennai would be prepared by using GIS technology. Few years back, the civic body conducted a survey and it issued ID cards to just 23000 vendors. There are more than one lakh street vendors who have not been issued any ID card till now. It is worth mentioning that vendors who do not have an ID card would not be able to avail benefits under the government schemes. It is well known that under the PM SVANIdhi scheme those street vendors with ID cards are entitled to collateral free working capital loans up to Rs 10,000.
