Water stagnation all around, deluge entering the houses of many in low lying places in Chennai were common sights yesterday as heavy rains lashed the city of Chennai yesterday. Truth is that Chennai city received so much rain after a gap of years. To release surplus water, the sluice gates of 3 main reservoirs have been opened also.
It was brought out by a weather official that since the start of NE monsoons in the month of October TN and Puducherry have received nearly 43% excess rainfall.
Chennai and its neighbouring districts like Chengalpet, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram etc received intermittent rains from Saturday morning and from the night, the rains poured non- stop. Till the morning of Sunday, rains poured continuously and it was the heaviest rainfall recorded in recent years.
Mr. S. Balachandran, deputy director general of Meteorology spoke about how all time highest rains were received by Chennai in the year 1976. He added that in the year 1985 Chennai received the highest rainfall on 2 different days. Six years back in 2015, Chennai city recorded the highest rainfall of 25 cms is known to us. It is now revealed that Chennai has received heavy rains close to that received in 2015.
Information is that such heavy rains were recorded in the past in the month of November in the NE monsoon time. It must be taken into account that the highest rainfall of 23 cms was recorded in Chennai at the Kamarajar Salai point near the Secretariat and 10 cm of rain was recorded in Ennore belonging to north Chennai. Point to be noted is that IMD gave Red category warning in TN and in Puducherry on Sunday.
In a phased manner, the surplus water from the 3 main reservoirs like Puzhal, Chembarambakkam and Poondi were released. These 3 reservoirs supplying drinking water to Chennai is well known.
