Are all the CCTV cameras really working in Chennai city?

There are many CCTV cameras installed in Chennai city, but do all these cameras work?
When it comes to CCTV density, the city of Chennai is well on top when compared to other major world cities like London, Beijing etc.
The bitter truth is that the above exists only on paper but not in reality. Not many of us would know that Chennai has got 2.8lakhs CCTV cameras now in every nook and corners of the city. It must be noted that in reality most of these CCTV cameras are not functioning due to lack of maintenance or due to dust, bad weather etc.
Recently, the police department in Chennai got a rude shock when they found that 30% to 40% CCTV cameras in a major locality in Chennai were not working. They came to know about this when they tried to track a criminal regarding a house burglary case there.
In Chennai, many cases regarding road accidents, chain snatching or mobile thefts etc are solved effectively by these CCTV cameras is well known. It was found out that in many places in Chennai CCTV cameras were either covered with dust or disconnected to bad weather. In many places in Chennai, the camera hood has been acting as a shelter for the birds.
The police department had installed just 5000 CCTV cameras in Chennai and constituency development funds of MPs and MLAs were used to install above 1lakh cameras in the city. Commercial establishments or private individuals have installed the remaining CCTVs in Chennai. Time for overhaul and renewal of maintenance contracts are the need of the hour.
It must be taken into account that in 2019 the TN government had sanctioned an amount of Rs 10lakhs each to 12 police districts in Chennai for the sake of camera maintenance for a year. Four DCP (Traffic) were also given Rs 10 lakhs each for CCTV maintenance.
