The shocking piece of information is that more passengers has been allowed to travel in the government buses flouting Covid-19 SOPs. The 3 day consecutive holidays has witnessed huge crowds thronging Koyambedu bus stand.

The government has made it clear that only 50percent of seat capacity would be allowed in the buses. Inspite of this, more passengers travelled in the buses and this was as per the officials belonging to the transport department. On 27th June 2021, buses resumed their operations in TN once again after more than 2 months of lockdown.

It is learnt that CMBT received an average footfall of 35000 to 40000 passengers per day during weekdays and 75000 to 80000 passengers per day on the weekends. On Thursday, there were 1.32lakhs passengers who travelled on the occasion of Vinayagar Chathurthi festival.

It was later pointed out by Mr. Raja Kanappan, transport minister that 100815 passengers travelled in 1834 regular bus services that were operated from CMBT. As many as 576 special buses were operated for 31680 commuters to meet the additional demand. The transport minister revealed that a detailed study on route wise commuters patronage was carried out and how new buses have been introduced whenever there is a demand. It is worth mentioning that all the buses that operated before the lockdown resumed except those buses to Kerala.

Until March 2020, CMBT handled 2lakhs commuters per day during the weekends. This was mentioned by official data. It added that during the major festival season, this figure goes up to 5lakhs.
