Usually in the month of Aadi, the vegetable business would be good, but this time around it was dull only.
After nearly a month, business had picked up at the popular Koyambedu wholesale market complex in Chennai. On Saturday, the prices of the vegetables went up by 10%. As the sales of vegetables have been going up, traders were of the view that the prices of vegetables would increase further soon.
It was pointed out by Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants Association that for almost a month the vegetable business was dull despite being Aadi month. He added that many weddings have been scheduled in the coming days. He was happy regarding the vegetables business that had picked up in the last 2 days. It is learnt that after the vegetables sales went up, the wastage of fruits and vegetables have reduced.
The current prices of vegetables are beans- Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg, broad beans- Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg, brinjal- Rs 20 to Rs 25 per kg, carrot- Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg, onions and potatoes- Rs 20 per kg etc.
According to the vegetable traders, this was the wholesale rate and the retail vendors would sell vegetables at extra 10% margin. As per Mr. Dhanasekar, secretary, Koyambedu Vegetable Fruits and Flower Merchants Association, the rates of vegetables would increase by next week. He threw light on how the sales of vegetables have increased but the prices have remained the same till now. He concluded that the prices would go up by 10 to 20% by next week.
Information collected is that the prices of apples are Rs 200 to Rs 250 per kg, sweet lime Rs 30 to Rs 35 per kg. Pineapples are being sold for Rs 35 to Rs 40 per kg and oranges, grapes for Rs 100 per kg
