In TN, the second Covid-19 infection wave has led to unimaginable rise in the cases and total lock down to control the infection spread was imposed is well known.  On Monday, an expert panel at a meeting with the CM of TN Mr. M.K. Stalin suggested that lifting the lockdown across TN must be done in a staggered manner because the lockdown has not brought down the number of Coronavirus cases uniformly in TN.

The expert panel was of the view that TN government must continue to make efforts to augment beds and human resources in various districts to handle subsequent Coronavirus waves and infections in the kids. At different districts and at different times, the Covid-19 cases have been peaking and this was mentioned by the doctors in the meeting. It is now known that the cases have reduced in the Chennai region but have increased in the western regions in TN.

Truth is that even within the region the cases in Erode have been rising whereas in Coimbatore the cases are on decline. It is said that extending lockdown in a region with lower infection rate and empty hospital wards would be of no use.

Dr. Prabhdeep Kaur, deputy director of NIE, mentioned that the health policies must make economic sense also. The district level economic factors must be considered for reducing the curbs or for tightening the curbs etc. It must be taken into note that for deciding on restrictions factors such as high positivity rate, increase in the number of deaths, high occupancy rate in hospitals, and infection doubling time must be considered.

There is a need now to upgrade health infrastructure and human resources in tier-2 cities as well as in the smaller towns. This was pointed out by some experts. Information is that to avoid infections like black fungus etc Tamil Nadu would ask the doctors to stop prescribing the steroids for a long duration. As per Dr. Sowmya Swaminathan, WHO chief scientist, that Tamil Nadu must prepare to handle subsequent waves. She added that Tamil Nadu must draft policies to safeguard children in the subsequent waves.
