The vendors have mentioned that except for a few vegetables the prices of most vegetables have come down this week. This would be the trend this week also and then the prices would increase gradually. It must be taken into account that the wholesale prices of vegetables like carrot, brinjal, ladies finger, beetroot, radish etc have reduced retail at Rs 20 per kg each.
It is learnt that the prices of vegetables like potatoes, onions, and tomatoes etc remained stable at Rs 20 to Rs 25 per kg.
Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex explained that there would be decrease in the supply of the vegetables from next week onwards. Later on, the prices would increase. Lesser crops have been planted by the farmers this year and the prices would not increase by any unusual amount. The prices of the vegetables would increase slowly from the second week of April till May.
Over the week, the prices of vegetables like beans and broad beans have increased from Rs 40 per kg to Rs 45 per kg. Point is that the prices of vegetables like drumstick, small onions and peas have increased to more than Rs 50 per kg. The prices of veggies like chow chow and cucumber have also increased. The rates of chow chow have increased to Rs 25 from Rs 20 last week and the rates of cucumber have increased to Rs 30 from Rs 25 last week. As the summer continues, vendors expect the prices of watery vegetables to increase.
