The government hospitals belonging to Chennai are now busy in adding more beds as the Covid-19 cases are increasing. These hospitals are also having plans to retain house surgeons and final year post graduate doctors for providing treatment to the patients.
After the cases came down, Kilpauk medical College Hospital or KMCH in Chennai reduced the number of beds for Covid-19 treatment to around 150. The truth is that on Wednesday, this hospital has converted its new surgical building with 450 beds especially for treatment of Coronavirus. The hospitals wanted to be ready in case of surge in the cases and this was brought out by the dean of KMCH Dr. P. Vasantha mani.
It is known that when the Covid-19 infection was at its peak, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai handled 1183 cases every day. This hospital is now busy readying the 5th and 6th floor in Tower -3block. According to the dean of RGGGH, Dr. Theranirajan, it was clear that there are 1618 beds in the tower-3 and there are around 259 cases now that included both confirmed and suspected ones.
The fifth and sixth floor in tower-3 is getting ready now. He spoke about how in case if 4 floors reach 50% occupancy then the patients could be shifted to 5th and 6thfloors. Point is that the 5th floor would have 120 beds. It is learnt that as of now there is no alarming rise in the Covid-19 cases and the hospital has been getting around 40 cases per day. This RGGGH has got enough doctors and paramedical staff etc.
The north Chennai based SMCH or Stanley Medical College hospital that had 1200 beds had retained one block with 600 beds. It is now learnt that 2 blocks with 400 beds each are getting ready in case of sudden surge in the cases. Dean of SMCH, Dr P. Balaji hinted that the hospitals have now reached 100 admissions and 2 other blocks are also getting ready now. He threw light on how one block in Covid Care Centre at Athipattu has been given and how asymptomatic patients would be sent there for treatment.
