In Chennai, government hospitals getting ready to face the COVID increase

The government hospitals in Chennai are now getting ready to tackle the rise in the Covid-19 cases.

It is now revealed that the authorities belonging to the government hospitals in Chennai are ready to meet any exigency in the patient intake. In case of a surge, the government hospitals are gearing up to add more facilities plus manpower etc.

It must be remembered that last year when the number of Coronavirus cases increased alarmingly various government medical colleges in Chennai had set up Covid-19 facilities. These hospitals later resumed their regular activities when the cases went down. From the month of October 2020, the government hospitals have been doing elective surgeries plus outpatient services etc.

It is well known that the number of Covid-19 cases have been increasing in the last 10 days in Chennai city. The important piece of information is that the facilities in the government hospitals for Covid-19 treatment have been intact. Tower-3 belonging to RGGGH in Chennai is still a Covid-19 facility with 3 floors and there are 120 beds each here. Out of these, 40 to 50 beds have been allocated for intensive care units.

According to the dean of RGGGH, Dr. E. Theranirajan, there are 4 wings on each floor 2 each for ICU and 2 for those in need of oxygen etc. He explained that the Covid-19 bed strength was 1619. It must be taken into account that per day 150 to 160 patients are received by the Covid-19 OP department on an average. He added that there were 184 in-patients and (111 persons have tested positive for Covid-19 and 73 persons with suspected Covid-19 symptoms).

Another important government hospital in Chennai is Government Medical College Hospital, Omandurar Estate and it has got 258 in-patients. It must be noted that 178 persons tested positive for Covid-19 infection. It was brought out by the dean of the hospital Dr. Jayanthi that the infrastructure created for Covid-19 was not dismantled. Point is that already 550 beds were allotted for Coivid-19 and the number of beds would be increased depending on the requirement. She then threw light on Tower 2 that has got Covid-19 facilities and 2 floors in Tower-3 would also be available.

According to the dean of Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, Dr .P. Balaji, the bed strength for Covid-19 was 1200. He mentioned how the nurses and professors have been asked to get ready in case of a surge in the Covid-19 cases.
