The recent surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in Chennai and in TN has raised the concerns of re-infection. It is now revealed by some public health experts that there is a lack of proper health database for maintaining the records of cases of re-infection now
According to the Covid sero survey, on an average, more than 33percent of people get exposed to the Coronavirus. As per Dr. Jacob John, senior virologist, a clear record of the first time as well as the re-infection cases must be maintained. The absence of a proper registry had led to the assumption that all the cases were the new ones. He spoke about how the public health department official must work on the registry for maintaining fresh cases plus prevent the surge.
The health experts were of the opinion that more than 60% virus exposure among people is needed to reduce transmission and the risk of virus reinfection is likely to be low. Dr. K. Kolandaswamy, former director of Public Health, mentioned about the clinical trend of viruses that were atleast more than 3 years. Those who were not infected earlier have been getting infected now due to the movement of the people. He shed light on the fact that the surge cannot be due to another wave or due to variant form in just a year.
According to Mr. J. Radhakrishnan, health secretary, a survey had indicated that Covid-19 exposure was more than 40% in Chennai. He added that the lack of adherence of the people to the safety standards has been a concern.
