Forced lifestyle change in Chennai - What the residents and others say?

Posted on: 24/Feb/2021 9:23:51 AM
The prices of petrol and diesel have been increasing and this has caused few problems to the residents of Chennai now. The reduction in the salary plus hike in the prices of fuels has made many residents use bicycles to reach their places of destinations.

It was highlighted by a Chennai resident that he previously used his bike to travel and now he is travelling by bicycle. It must be noted that his bike gave a mileage of 45km per litre and he used to fill up to 7litres once in 10 days. He revealed that in 2012 he used to spend Rs 420 to Rs 430 for 7litres of fuel and how now he spends more than Rs 200 per day. The reason why he opted for a bicycle to reach his office was he was unable to afford such a huge amount for the fuel.

Yesterday, one litre of petrol was sold at Rs 92.90 and diesel at Rs 86.31 in Chennai. Information is that the price of auto gas was Rs 44.5 per litre. It must be remembered that on 5th May 2020 when lock down was lifted the petrol was sold at Rs 72.26 per litre and diesel at Rs 65.69 per litre.

The hike in the fuel prices has made the lives of many auto drivers tough now and many drivers are finding it difficult to make both ends meet. Truth is that the hike in the fuel prices has affected the vegetable vendors too. The Koyambedu market has been on low since lockdown and the hike in the fuel rates has been an additional burden. This was brought out by Mr. G.D. Rajasekaran, president, Koyambedu Peria Market Association. He added that the vehicles that would be bringing the vegetables would be charging 10 to 20% more. Point is that the prices of vegetables could not be increased now because the business has been poor.

There would be a rise in the price of perishables soon due to a hike in the fuel rates and this was according to Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer of the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Association.
