Don’t be surprised if you come across green spaces of trees like neem, tropical almonds etc in future in the Koyambedu market complex in Chennai!!

It is now revealed a portion of this market complex would be converted into a green space. To increase the green cover in this superb market complex, Care Earth Trust (NGO from Chennai) has associated with the Market Management Committee. To increase tree cover in the vacant space, the periphery of the vegetable market along with Kaliamman Koil Street has nearly 300 saplings planted.

In as many as 3 rows, saplings belonging to various species like neem, tropical almond and Portia are being planted here. According to Mr. S. Balaji, former principal chief conservator of forests and advisor, Care Earth Trust, this has been one of the potential places for developing green spaces. He added that many saplings that were planted 2 months back have grown up to a height of 2feet to 3feet.  Bamboo saplings were also planted in the 1.5km space.

It is important to note that CMA has got just 9.5percent of green space and to reduce the effects of pollution there is a need to increase the green cover to 20percent. In the year 2018, a five year greening plan was proposed to GCC with an objective of planting 10 lakhs species across Chennai city.

It is learnt that this initiative is a part of strategy to increase green urban spaces and enhance biodiversity. Point is that Care Earth Trust has been involved in planting ornamental shrubs on the market complex. There are plans to promote native grass varieties also here. In future, there are plans to create a small tree park and it would have both palm and bamboo varieties. Mr. Balaji later threw light on how the area has been used as dumping space for vegetable waste etc.
