To make up for the academic loss due to Covid-19 pandemic, schools in Tamil Nadu would function for 6 days a week. Now, the Tamil Nadu government has extended the noon meal scheme for the students to Saturday also.

It is worthy to mention that normally the noon meals were provided to the students belonging to government and government aided schools in Tamil Nadu from Monday to Friday. Truth is that these schools conduct classes for just half a day on Saturdays. The school education department has ordered the schools in Tamil Nadu to work for 6 days a week now as the schools were closed down for 9 months to contain the Coronavirus infection.

The students belonging to classes 9 and 10 would be provided noon meals as a special case. This was brought to light by an officer belonging to the school education department. Superb piece of information is that more than 5 lakhs students of classes 9 and 10 would be benefited by this noon meal scheme in Tamil Nadu now. It is learnt that each student would get 735 calories and 23gms of proteins for lunch. On Saturdays, more than 16000 nutritious meal centres would function and all the centres have been asked to prepare meals as per the requirements. This was mentioned by the official. The meal cost per child has been worked out at Rs 9 and it would be on par with upper primary norms.

An amount of Rs 50 lakh per day would be spent per day for this noon meal scheme. Apart from the noon meal, the students from primary class to class 8 would also dry ration from the government of Tamil Nadu. For one month, each primary class student would get 3.1 kg rice, 1 kg dhal plus other items.

The students belonging to middle level would get 4.6 kg rice and 1.25 kg dhal. It is mentioned that the students belonging to both the above said categories would get additional dhal in lieu of Bengal grams. For January, distribution of dry ration has been completed and distribution of provisions would continue in February. This was also mentioned by the official.
