Egg and broiler chicken prices have come down in TN due to bird flu threat

Posted on: 09/Jan/2021 10:11:35 AM
The poultry hub of TN is Namakkal and here the egg rates have crashed down now by 0.25 paise. The threat of bird flu has been cited as the reason for the drop in the egg prices.

In the Namakkal zone, the wholesale egg rates have been fixed at Rs 4.85 paisa per egg and this was almost 0.25 paisa less than the price of Rs 5.10 that was fixed by NECC or National egg Coordination Committee.

According to the president of TN Egg Poultry Farmers Marketing Society, Mr. Vangili Subramaniam it was clear that the poultry farms were selling eggs 30 to 50 paisa below the price determined by NECC. He added that there has been no stagnation of the eggs. It is well known that bird flu outbreak has been reported in parts of Kerala and this has made the authorities to take up culling of hens and ducks within 1 km radius of the affected places. To prevent the spread of bird flu virus, culling of birds is to be taken up.

Just weeks before the Pongal festival every year, the sales of eggs become sluggish. Point is that inspite of the bird flu outbreak there has been no stagnation of eggs this time around in the poultry farms. Mr. Subramaniam later hinted that people still consumed eggs to improve their immunity against Covid-19 infection.

It has been revealed that the farmers were forced to sell the eggs just little above from the production cost of Rs 4 per egg. In the Namakkal zone, normally, more than 1100 poultry farms produce nearly 4 crore eggs per day and out of this one crore eggs would be sent to Kerala. There would not be any bird flu spread in Namakkal due to their strict adherence to the safety protocols and this was pointed out by some poultry farmers.

A poultry farmer spoke about how the poultry farms were disinfected frequently and how proper hygienic methods have been implemented to prevent any outbreak. He shed light on how all the vehicles entering the poultry farm were sanitised and workers adopted better hygiene methods.
