In the wake of ban on the fishing in Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu, the prices of sea foods have increased enormously now here. It must be noted that the country boat fishing has been exempted from fishing in the curfew and not all boats were allowed for fishing. In the recent times, fish catching has been reducing as fishing goes against the normal routine.

Out of total fleet of 400 boats, just 25 boats have been allowed for fishing every day. This has led to steep decline in fishing and finally the prices have shot up. This was according to Mr. Robert, president of Threspuram Country Boat Fishermen Association belonging to Thoothukudi.

He then explained about how in the normal times the country boats would travel to a distance of 70 to 80 nautical miles to locate fishing grounds of Threspuram coast and even stay at sea for 2 to 3 days to catch sufficient amounts of fish. Now in this present situation with restriction, the boats returned back to the shore in the same night after catching fish at just 12 to 13 nautical miles. The average catch would be usually 300 to 400 kgs but now each of the boats could net just 100 kgs.

The procurement price of sheer fish or seela has now touched Rs 1000 per kilogram as against the normal price of Rs 600 to Rs 700 depending on its size and weight.

Information is other types of fishes such as oola, vila, para, saw an increase by Rs 200 to Rs 300 at procurement level itself. Many vendors could not make enough to break even as they have procured fishes at higher rates.

The rise in the prices of sea foods has made many customers think twice now. This has resulted in the low crowd at the market.
