As the public failed to keep the strongly advised social distancing between one another in the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market, 4 more persons have been presently confirmed with coronavirus infection!

Subsequently, the proposal to trifurcate the Koyambedu wholesale market at 3 different places in order to reduce the crowd lele is being reviewed seriously.

As no decision could emerge in a discussion/meeting held between the government officials and the traders, the final round of discussion is scheduled on Tuesday (today, 28th April).

The team from the central government visiting the State of Tamil Nadu to inspect/monitor the coronavirus-prevention-activities-progress, took a monitoring visit to Koyambedu on Sunday (26th April). In this situation, 3 traders in the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market complex and a person who has set up saloon nearby have been confirmed with coronavirus infection for a total of 4 persons!

So, a meeting was organized on Monday (27th April) to decide the next step of action. The State Government Secretary for Agriculture Sugandeep Singh Bedi, Police Commissioner A. K. Viswanathan, Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner Prakash, CMDA Member/Secretary Karthikeyan. And the representatives of the Traders Association participated in this meeting.

During the meeting, the officials put up the recommendation to trifurcate the market and locate in 3 different places - Koyambedu, Madhavaram, and Kenambakkam. The traders responded asking for allotment of place near the omnibus station or within the Chennai Metro City limits.

This was responded by the officials with the observation that over a period of the last 1 month, social distancing was not all maintained! Mentioning wholesale, only retail sales were being carried out! Further, it is confirmed that 3 persons in the complex have been infected with coronavirus!  If it increases, there will be a prospect of closing down the entire complex!

However, the traders protested against this! They explained that the crowd level in the market complex had increased only due to the lockdown declaration by the government! And shifting to the new locations will adversely affect their business/sales!

As closing the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable/fruit/flower complex would increase the hardships already faced by the citizens, no clear-cut decision could be taken. Subsequently, it was announced that another meeting will be organized today (Tuesday, 28th April) at 10.00 AM on this issue. It is gathered that a final decision as to whether to allow the Koyambedu market to continue or to shift it elsewhere will be taken during this meeting!
