For new private law colleges in TN, norms relaxed now

Posted on: 22/Feb/2020 10:02:57 AM
For the sake of establishing new private self-financing law colleges, the government of TN has relaxed norms.

Important information is earlier the permission has been issued only if the college management was able to find stipulated land 4 acres to 10 acres within 15 km radius of district or session court.

Now, the norms have been relaxed and the land could be within 30 km radius of district or sessions court. The main reason for this relaxation of norms was due to the difficulty involved in finding the land parcels for starting new law colleges.

On 19th February, state law department had issues orders in this regard by making amendments to the Tamil Nadu Establishment of Private Law Colleges (Regulation) Rules 2018. Till the year 2014,TN had blanket ban on private law schools is known. It must be noted that when the new rules came into existence in 2018 there were oppositions regarding opening up of law education to private sectors.

The number of private institutions in the law field has increased from one in the year 2014 to 14 now after the new rules came into existence. Import ant information is the state of TN has got the highest number of private law colleges in south India. Fact is other states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Haryana have many private law colleges than TN.

According to Mr. Raja, former zonal secretary of AUT working at Trichy based National Law School, it is clear that further privatisation would affect the quality of judicial profession.
