The central government has decided to operate 100 routes throughout the country with 150 private sector trains.
Niti Ayog has invited the private sector for this.
Niti Ayog has released the draft on the discussions regarding the engagement of the private sector in Railways. It has also requested for suggestions/feedback on this regard before 17th January.
It has informed that the central government has granted approval to operate 150 private sector trains in 100 routes. Further, it has been mentioned that the private sector concerns can decide the route/fare on their own.
An auction is proposed to be conducted to select the private sectors. In order to participate in the auction, the concerned private sector agencies must have a minimum of fixed assets worth Rs. 450 Crores. An issue regarding a refund for delays over 15 minutes has also been reviewed. Further, it has also been decided to operate trains at 160 kmph in certain specific routes.
It is worth noting at this junction that private trains are already in operation in the country in the routes Mumbai-Ahmadabad and Delhi-Lucknow.
