The presence of dilapidated buildings in Chennai has been creating many issues for the people. Hence the need to identify these buildings and to destroy them is very important.

The news now is GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has identified 354 dilapidated buildings across Chennai city to be demolished. It is brought out that notices have been issued to just 139 dilapidated buildings.

A senior official belonging to GCC expressed his thoughts and said two-thirds of these dilapidated buildings identified in the surveys before the monsoon were present in the Royapuram zone that has the traders district of Sowcarpet.

He added that majority of dilapidated buildings were present in Sowcarpet area in north Chennai. Information is there is great resistance to demolition of these buildings despite the risk.  He then explained how the buildings were old and in poor shape and how when a part of the building falls on the passers-by then it could lead to serious injuries or death also.

In the recent times, such type of incidents has taken place in place in north Chennai, T. Nagar and in Nandanam etc. Spot surveys of the old buildings to check for the cracks and other signs of despair have been conducted by the corporation assistant and executive engineers. The age of the buildings has been verified also. It is important to note that the complaints from the residents are taken seriously now and based on this call is taken whether to demolish the building or not.

It was then revealed by the official that demolition notice would be served and this would need to be responded within 15 days to 1 month of time by the residents. If the resident doesn’t demolish the building, then the civic body could bring its own equipments to demolish the buildings but the cost would be borne by the resident.

It must be noted that the resident could challenge the notice in the court or get a certificate from licensed surveyors belonging to CMDA that the building was safe to live.

In the Royapuram zone as many as 236 buldings have been identified as dilapidated and just 82 notices were issued. This was out of the total 139 notices issued. It is now revealed that in Anna Nagar zone 42 buildings were identified as dilapidated but notices were issued to just 9 buildings.
