Ask any Chennai resident where Connemara Library is located, their reply would be Egmore. This library constructed in Indo-Saracenic style is highly popular with the people of Chennai and is now making the news.
It was in the year 1896 Connemara library was established and since then this library has been the home for a copy of all books, newspapers and periodicals published in India. It is sensational to mention that this library also serves as a depository library for United Nations.
A couple of months back, roof and domes of this library collapsed and it grabbed many eyeballs. It is now said that the PWD of the Public Works Department has taken up work to renovate the portion of the roof and domes. Information gathered is the leaky and damaged roof of this library would get a facelift after many years. In the 1970s, the present building was added to the heritage portion of the library.
The School Education department has been providing funds for the renovation of Connemara Library. It was later mentioned by an official of PWD that the portion of the roof collapsed because of ageing and Madras Terrace roofing of the heritage structure is being reconstructed now. He added that the leakage in other parts of the roof would also be repaired along with the 2 domes.
It must be taken into account that the renovation works including the electrical works have been taken up at a cost of Rs 1.5 crores. The school education department has taken up the annual maintenance works. The PWD has been roped in because restoration of Connemara Library is a heritage restoration project.
Wooden planks would be used to recreate the interior portion of the roofing and the originality would be restored by this. The important piece of information is skilled people from Thiruvananthapuram would be brought for the renovation work.
