Chennai city added one more feather to its cap when in the year 2015 first fully air-conditioned bus shelter was opened at Asarghana bus stop opposite to Alandur metro station.
The shocking piece of news that has emerged is this bus shelter is not maintained properly and has become an ornamental structure. It must be noted that the commuters at this bus shelter are exposed to the elements.
This bus shelter was built at a cost of Rs 1.25 crores and has got three rooms measuring 360 sqft in size. It also has got 2 toilets in it and was handed over to a private contractor for maintenance.
Just 6 months back the air-conditioner developed some faults and it has not been repaired even now. This bus shelter is now abandoned by the commuters and that is a sad piece of information.
The chief executive of the Cantonment Board of St Thomas Mount and Palavaram Mr. Ajith Reddy was contacted. According to him contractor entrusted the job of maintaining this bus shelter at Asarghana. He faced issues when he was not allowed to put advertisements as state highways objected to it. Mr. Ajith Reddy further threw light on the fact that the Madras High Court ruled in the favour of the contractor and that was about 2 months back. He was unsure about why the repair work in this shelter was not carried out to set it right.
It must be noted that Alandur is very important place in Chennai and people travel by buses plus metro trains to reach their places of destinations.
