The latest news is in terms of its share in wind and solar generation the state of Tamil Nadu is currently in ninth position and this has been confirmed by IEEFA or Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis belonging to United States of America.

It must be noted that the report power industry transition, here and how included case studies that were conducted on many countries regarding the relative share of reliance on renewable energies and they have ranked Denmark, South Australia, Uruguay, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Texas, California, Tamil Nadu.

In the year 2017 Denmark had share of 52.8% of the total wind and solar generation whereas Tamil Nadu had share of just 14.3 %. According to the study it is now revealed that existing integration technologies as well as policy measures were utilized to improve their diversity of domestic generation. By these above mentioned the nine countries and regions have adapted to high market shares of solar and wind power.

One important point to note here is undercutting and reliability has not been compromised in this aspect. In variable renewable market share the state of Tamil Nadu is well above the rest in India.

Installed renewable energy capacity is another aspect where Tamil Nadu leads India. According to a statistical report as on March 2017, out of total of 30GW of installed capacity in TN as much as 9.6GW came from variable wind and solar power and this amounts to 32% of the total.

Others like firm hydroelectricity, nuclear, bio-mass and run-of-the-river added 7 per cent, 8 per cent and 3 per cent respectively.

The study also pointed out that end- of- life wind farms that were installed many years back contributed to TN states renewable energy hugely. The report also stated that the average utilization rates are very low and is just 18 %. It is now said that the state of TN would be served better by diversified electricity generation mix.

As per Mr Tim Buckley who is IEEFA Energy Finance Studies Australasia Director, nearly 80 per cent of all electricity demand growth in the next decade would be got by low cost solar capital additions plus re-powering of wind projects in Tamil Nadu. Improvement in the efficiency of energy and reduced transmission and distribution losses were also stated by this Tim Buckley.

It is now said that state of TN has got total wind capacity of 8000 MW and 2500 MW solar capacity it would be trying to increase the capacity.
