Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisami will inaugurate a new project - Kudi maramathu thittam - in order to overcome the drought situation and the restoration and complete cleansing of all the water bodies in the state.
The state government of Tamil Nadu has announced that this project consisting of 1159 activities in 30 districts will be executed at a cost of Rs. 100 Crores during this current financial year.
A brief on the press release by the government in this regard:
Due to the severe failure of the Northeast Monsoon rain season, unprecedented drought conditions are prevailing in the whole of the Tamil Nadu state.
Hence, the state government has decided to initiate the steps for more economic usage of water from all the water-bodies available in the state, improved rainwater harvesting, the creation of new water-bodies, enhancing the management of the groundwater resources and streamlining the prevailing system of water consumption, and revamping the water-bodies in bad condition.
A special review committee consisting of retired expert engineers will be set up to draft the recommendations for carrying out the above activities.
The report made by this committee will be taken up in full earnest by the state government. As a first step towards this effort, the old repair system of Kudi Maramathu will be brought back to full strength as a part of this ambitious project to renovate/revamp/cleanse all the water bodies in the state of Tamil Nadu.
Under the kudi maramathu project, 1159 tasks will be executed in 30 districts during this current financial year at a cost of Rs. 100 Crores.
As most of these tasks are estimated to cost under Rs. 10 Lakhs, the team including consumers will start the work and complete within a day. Moreover, it is planned to execute this concurrently at several districts at the same time as people�s movement.
It is planned to allocate larger amounts for this scheme in the future financial years and the activities will be undertaken with the help of NABARD (National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development) funds.
In the year 2017-18, these activities will be executed during the months of April and May throughout the state at a cost of Rs. 300 Crores as a people movement.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisami will inaugurate this kudi maramathu project during the 1st week of next month (March).
The press release mentions that this project will be executed in the presence of peoples� representatives with the help of PWD (Public Works Department).
