��Settsu��, the Coast Guard Ship from Japan arrived at the Chennai Port here on Thursday. The 104 meter long patrol vessel commanded by Cap Kiyoyuki Sakasegawa has come for the joint exercise to be conducted by the Indian and Japan Coast Guards on January 29.
Over the last decade, the visit of Indian and Japan Coast Guard ships for combined exercises has been institutionalised. The exercises were scheduled every year alternately between the two countries. The eleventh edition of this exercise called �Sahyog Kaijin� would be held on January 29 here.
The combined exercise aims to strengthen the working level relationship between the two coast guards and further refi ne the joint operating procedures.
The exercise encompasses the scenarios of the hijacking of a merchant vessel and its subsequent rescue in a combined Coast Guard operation of both countries. Operation of Indian Coast Guard helicopters from Japan Coast Guard ship and vice versa and transferring of mail by helicopter from an ICG ship to JCG ship would be the other highlights of the exercise. In addition, the Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft would be demonstrating their prowess before the Japanese delegation. The exercise would be jointly witnessed by the Director General, Indian Coast Guard, and the Commandant, Japan Coast Guard.
