On Friday, the usage of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 both of which are demonetized was extended. Accordingly, the government now allows using these rupee notes also for paying taxes, fees, fuel, and household utility bills, and for purchasing from cooperative stores until 14th November, as people struggle a lot to find alternative currency.
At the time of withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes on the night of 9th November, it was announced that these notes will be accepted at government hospitals, public transport, air ticketing, milk booths, crematoria or burial ground, and so on.
It has now got expanded to paying metro rail tickets, highway and road troll, medicines, doctor prescription from government as well as private pharmacies, LPG cylinders, electricity and water bills, railway catering and ASI monument entry tickets.
Earlier, this extension was made only until mid-night today, but the same is now extended for 72 more hours. People can make use of the old currency for making payments at cooperative stores for which they should carry valid id proofs. To note, public utility bills include household bills. Court fee can also be paid using these demonetized notes. It is also to be noted that the Ministry of Road Transport has waived off national highways toll charges until 14th November.
