Chennai corporation has warned people about rat fever or leptospirosis, which spread during the monsoon season.
In a statement here, the civic body urged residents to drink water only after boiling it. It also asked them to avoid consuming water sold in sachets and use mineral water only after checking its quality.
`Before consuming food and after using the toilet, the public should wash their hands with soap. They should not allow water to stagnate in balconies, flower pots, unused tyres and other things. If allowed, it would pave way for the breeding of mosquitoes which would result in water-borne diseases like malaria and dengue,` said the press release.
Requesting people not to use water from hand pumps, the Corporation said they could use water supplied to them by the Water Board at the stipulated time.
`They can immediately lodge complaint if they find any mixing of sewage or other things in drinking water or if there is any blockage in the water line. People should avoid consuming eatables sold in open. In houses too, they should eat food only after heating it. They should not defecate in the open, instead use toilets at their houses or public lavatories. People should keep their environment clean to protect themselves from water-related diseases,` the press release said.
The civic body urged the public to dump waste in bins alone. `If vomiting or dysentry takes place, they should often drink saltwater and other liquid food. Also, they should immediately contact Corporation Health Centres or hospitals for treatment,` it said.
The Corporation of Chennai has issued helpline numbers to enable the public to contact in case of any emergency or treatment relating to water-borne diseases. They are 1913, 25912686, 25912687.
