Facebook to stop support for BlackBerry OS 10

Posted on: 24/Mar/2016 4:18:07 PM
Following close at the heels of WhatsApp, Facebook is also ending support for the BlackBerry OS 10. Facebook announced that it will discontinue support of its APIs or Application Programming Interfaces for BlackBerry.

In an official blog post, BlackBerry has said, (We) are disappointed as they know so many users love these apps (Facebook and WhatsApp). We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but at this time, their decision stands (but let them know how you feel on social media, using the hashtag #IloveBB10Apps). Our commitment to BlackBerry 10 and to developers has not changed - we know our developer community continues to be one of the strongest proponents of BlackBerry 10 and they are creating thousands of apps every month.

Last year, BlackBerry introduced its own Android based phone called the Priv. Priv has a sleek design and touch sensitive keys that allow users to swipe, scroll and set up shortcuts. It was priced at Rs. 62,990.

As a way to support them and to promote new apps, we`re now featuring some of the best native applications on BlackBerry World in a list called Great Apps on BlackBerry. The category will be a list of 20 applications, featured for two weeks, once per month, similar to the way we feature apps on the BlackBerry World Carousel. We look forward to new apps and new customers on BlackBerry 10 and thank our developer community for their continued strong support.

While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they dont offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our apps features in the future. This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp. (We recommend) upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp, said the blog post.
